Her sole purpose was to become a titled pageant holder so she could start new and become the director of King and Queen Cleveland working out of the Cleveland Ronald McDonald house, temporary home to 37 families from all over the world.
She knows first hand the emotions these children and families are feeling. King and Queen Cleveland is a non-profit organization developed to raise the confidence and self-esteem of girls and boys with cancer.King and Queen Cleveland helps terminally and seriously ill pediatric patients fight the psychological war of illness. They forget to be kids and resort to the isolation of the desease. When qfad comes to the hospital we give the patients a reason to be a kid again.
Marla asked co-workers at Caribee Cove in Vermilion, her daughter Christa who works at Hairline Clinic that provides free hair pieces for children with hair loss due to cancer treatments, and her friend Sharon Ritchie from Strongsville and others to help host parties that pamper the kids with makeovers, manicures, temporary tattoos and their very own coronation ceremony.
Each patient receives a real rhinestone tiara or crown! We include boys and girls from all ages, so far- ages 1 to 22!
Mom's or family members who want a manicure recieves one. We offer haircuts to the parents, some of them are there 2 or 3 months at a time!
People may assume that putting make-up on these kids and proclaiming their beauty encourages self-evaluation through outer beauty. However by taking this direct approach to their self-esteem issues, we teach them to overcome physical insecurities rather than distracting them from their situation. Research has proven that positive attention, as given through parties, can improve the physical condition of those with illinesses.
Even family members who attend benefit from the party. Parents see their sons and daughters as little boys and girls, Not sick children. We also include siblings of the patients. Many times siblings can be overlooked while the family tends to the needs of the patients.
The local chapter's goals are high. To have a party once a month and also take dinner for the apx. 50-70 family members who are staying there.
King and Queen Cleveland strives to provide a time where girls and boys can forget about their treatment, needles and loneliness-to shower them in positive attention and to create happy memories to sustain them through hard times. The tiara's, crowns and pictures provides the children with something tangible to remember the day-to take out and use when they need to escape into a world where they rule. A world where they are "King and Queen Cleveland"
