The Cleveland Ohio Queen for a Day Chapter held an event on Sunday Aug. 29th 2010.
We called it "Pizza Party and Face Painting" at 6:00 at the " Ronald McDonald House" that serves "The Cleveland Clinic" "University Hospital" and "Rainbow Children's and Babies Hospital" here in Cleveland Ohio.
For the first time I arrived early enough to look at some of the beautiful outdoor gardens here. They are featured on "Cleveland's Garden Tour" every year. It is amazing the beauty of nature that is provided in the heart of the city beside all 3 of these world renowned Hospitals'.
As usual we started with providing dinner for the 37 families that call RMH their temporary home away from home. Pizza salad chips and soda is considered a real treat here. A volunteer group provides meals 365 day s a year.
Heather Tharp who has a Bachelors Degree in Psychology and is now working towards an advanced degree in Nursing , thrilled me by bringing in some face painting books. She is so enthusiastic and puts a lot of effort and thought into what she does to make the children have a wonderful time. We are so happy to have her with our group.
Also we had a new volunteer a very delightful friend of Heather's who has been waiting to get involved named Monica. She works for the city of Cleveland Sharon Ritchie and Myself, Marla Hayes were in attendance.
At our last event I got a great idea to face paint added kits to my treasure trove and forgot all about them! Heather stepped right up and face painted for the first time in her life!
I had bought many additional facepainting supplies for our upcoming event and said "here ladies just wing it."
I painted fingernails got photo releases' signed took the photos and as usual, when each child was done they LOVE to go through the blue boys treasure box and the girls pink treasure box. It is so much fun watching them choose!
My mother and sister have been making colorful hats for the kids (they keep trying to teach me) and the kids LOVED them so THANK YOU SO MUCH to my sister Marcia and mom Ann. They say it is now time for me to learn as my sister crochets preemie blankets for hospitals in Dayton and my mom crochets potholders for her volunteer work in Mexico. I am hoping once they see how happy the children are they may make a few more as I pretend to watch and learn. I love to buy the yarn for the color and feel. So that will remain my job for the time being!
So for the face painting . I always have nurse Heather check that all the ingredients are safe. THE KIDS LOVE IT. I NEED MORE MIRRORS. The kids and parents love to sit and watch as the children decide what they want and watch as they are being pampered. What a blast.
I also do the "temporary tattoos" so I have yet do do face painting. I went and got more supplies for our next event and lucky for me I had several children to practice on at my grandsons birthday party so I will be ready next time.
One little girl was so well versed and well spoken and so intelligent . She was from Saudi Arabia. She kept coming back and asking for for more pictures and more "Bling" I asked her how old she was. She replied "I am 10 I am Interested in the sciences and I wish to be a Doctor when I grow up". "But right now I wish to be a beautiful Queen just like you. I want my toes just like yours" (they had rhinestones on them) She got it!
Her parents were so deeply grateful they insisted on giving something back to us . So they ask if we would honor them by sharing a meal they had prepared. So that was a first for all of us. Lamb, rice, fresh dates and homemade yogurt. We were the ones who ended up feeling like Royalty.
We had 6 girls and 6 boys who had a great time that night. The house was unusually empty as it was the first week back at school!
Regards until the next event. Marla Hayes
